How is the discount calculated?

You get the discounted price by multiplying the original price by (100 − discount percentage) / 100. Take a product that originally costs 80 pounds. A 25% discount reduces the price to 80 pounds × 0.75 = 60 pounds. You save 20 pounds.

An additional discount is calculated based on the already discounted price. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% discount does not give a total discount of 30%. The price drops from 100 pounds to 80 pounds, then to 72 pounds. The total discount is 28%. You can use the calculator to apply successive discounts and see the total discount. You can also calculate price increases.

If you know the original and the discounted price, the discount percentage is obtained as follows: (1 − discounted price / original price) × 100. For example, if the original price is 50 pounds and the discounted price is 35 pounds, the calculation is: (1 − 35 / 50) × 100 = 30%.
