The tax rates above are individual tax rates, not combined rates. The federal GST is 5%. It applies across Canada. Five provinces have combined their provincial tax with the GST into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
GST/HST 15%: NB New Brunswick, NL Newfoundland and Labrador, PE Prince Edward Island. 14%: NS Nova Scotia. 13%: ON Ontario. 5%: AB Alberta, BC British Columbia, MB Manitoba, NT Northwest Territories, NU Nunavut, QC Quebec, SK Saskatchewan, YT Yukon.
PST 9.975%: QC Quebec, where the tax is called the QST (Quebec Sales Tax). 7%: BC British Columbia and MB Manitoba. 6%: SK Saskatchewan.
Four provinces have a separate provincial tax. In these provinces, the total tax is the sum of the two tax rates: 14.975% in Quebec, 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, and 11% in Saskatchewan. Both taxes are calculated on the price before tax, so they are not applied on top of each other. Calculate the taxes one at a time and add the results, because each tax is rounded separately, and using a single combined rate can result in a one-cent difference in the final amount.

Exchange rates are updated from the European Central Bank every day at approximately 16:00 CET. If you select a day in the calculator on which no new rate data has been published (such as Saturday or Sunday), the previous rate and its date will be loaded into the calculator. Euro conversions come directly from the ECB. Conversions between other currencies are cross rates derived from ECB rates.

By default, this calculator only uses the European Central Bank's rates. If you need to use a different rate, you can set it under 'or your own rate'.

By selecting the 'Taxation country' option for either 'From currency' or 'To currency', you determine which currency the VAT is calculated in. This can affect how the figures are rounded.
